I wouldn't try to remove it. However, you would be surprised what soaking clubs in Coke does. Back when I was a bag room kid in the 90s we would soak the png Eye 2 Beryllium Copper Irons in Coke and they would come out shiny and new looking. Eats the finish right off of the club. I don't believe that this would work the same way.

The black looks great and has no reflective properties when you lay it open. Its a great finish.

Soak in white vinegar overnight and then scrub with steel wool.
