I'm spoiled by having riding carts included as part of my membership. I want to walk more, but frankly, playing as often as I do, it's easy to say to myself when I get to the course "I'll walk tomorrow and ride today." Then tomorrow comes and I push the walking idea back another day. I'm not lazy, I just tend to make lots of excuses, like, "Hmmm, let's see, if I walk today I'll be sore tomorrow, and tomorrow I have that match with Bill. I want to be fresh for that, so...better ride today!"

Seriously, though, I do enjoy walking and when I do, sometimes I carry and sometimes I push my Sun Mountain. I find the push cart more tiring than carrying due to all the hills on my home course. I think it's easier on the back to carry standing in good posture than to push hunched over up the hills. Also, when I carry I use a Titleist lightweight carry bag with minimal stuff in the pockets, yet, when I push, I usually have my Titleist Mid-Staff bag loaded with everything plus the kitchen sink, which makes those hills even more work.

Either way, carrying or pushing, walking the course is the best way to play your best golf in my opinion. You can be in your own world, with no cart-mate talking about what he and his buddies did last night, his cute kids, or HIS next or previous shot. Walking alone allows you to focus on YOUR game. Walking up to the ball gives you an opportunity to visual your upcoming shot more clearly and from a different perspective than you might get riding over to it in a cart from the side and being dropped of a yard away. You often have a better view of the course and the shot at hand, being better connected with the environment, by walking.

Ideally, I think the best option is a remote controlled, motorized push cart, or even better,.....a real life caddie. (Too rich for my blood.)

With my back finally fixed, I am most definitely walking more this year.
We are going back to the same course as last year for my work league, and it is a very pushcart friendly cart, so I am definitely walking at least 9 every week.
  3. I prefer to walk any chance I get, but at 51 and with 2 ruptured disc in my back, carrying is out of the question. My push cart allows me to still walk and enjoy my round. I always encouraged my son to use a push cart in his HS and college events to conserve his energy. He finally wised up in college and used a cart anytime he could.
