I generally work out 4-5 times per week, ever since I quit the cancer sticks and packed on about 25 pounds. (Just shy of two years ago.) The weight hasn't come off, but I'm far healthier.

I do 2-3 days of cardio on a treadmill and usually 2 days of TPI exercises. For the latter, it's a mix of arms, shoulders, rotational movements, hips, and some squats and lunges. I guess it's working since I went from a 21 to 16.8 over the course of this year. I've noticed more consistency and that the distance is also more consistent. I'm not pounding the ball or anything, but it's just more in my upper range.

I really like your important point about helping one another get better. It's one of the many things about Team Titleist I love, how supportive we all can be and are of one another. Best of luck to you going into the winter season.

With both hips replaced, I have to be careful about working out but stretching and various exercises are good. When in doubt I'll check with the Doc.

At 56 I work out 3-4 times a week now that I have lost over 38lbs in the last 6 years. I started working out due to a shoulder injury that made swinging my driver painful. Found a small tear left front shoulder, but doctor said if it doesn't hurt in daily life or sleeping no need for surgery. PT showed me how to build the shoulder muscles near and around it and I have never looked back or had shoulder pain since.

My workout consist of lower body, cardio, core & upper body every time I go. My core rotation has gotten so much easier when I play I sometimes over turn without noticing until the bad shot shows up.

Upper body: (free weights dumbells): bench presses, curls, tricep extensions, rows. I do 3 reps of 10 light weights (half of what I truly can do)

Core: 1 minute Planks, Russian twists with medicine ball, resistance machine with light weights for obliques, ab cunches, straight legged lifts.

Lower Body: leg presses, leg curls, leg extensions, (all on machines) squats, (step riser 3 sets of 20)

Cardio: Each day is different but I do: Elliptical 20 minutes, Stationary bike 2.5 miles, Run .5 mile and I always walk to cool down .5 mile each day.

I finish each workout with 25 minutes in the dry sauna to relax the muscles out too.

I am in the best shape of my life, and I am below 200lbs (189lbs) for the first time in 24 years. With a max weight of 261 lbs 11 years ago before I got back into golf.

I wish I had a TPI instructor near me so I can get to another level but nearest one is over 2.5 hours away.

Great post though & always happy to share if helps someone out as well.

  6. I have developed a problem. When teeing off on a par 3, I am topping the ball or pulling to left. Any suggestions

  8. It's supervised training with a pro every week for me every winter. If the weather is good I play even in the winter. In The Netherlands winters keep getting softer last years...

I am just starting to workout and I was wondering if anyone lost distance as as they dropped weight? I would like to lose about 50 lbs to get back to 200 lbs, but I would prefer to add distance or at least maintain. Any thoughts?
  10. JD - i was at 217 lbs. Now down to 179, I completely changed what I ate, didn't go to the gym, didn't start running. I gave up meat and dairy and emphasized reducing any processed foods, it was very easy to do and i feel completely reborn. It all started when i watched What The Health and decided to try it out, 9 months later i will never go back, other good docs on netflix is Forks over Knives and Game Changers, good luck and i didnt lose a yard of distance.

Highly recommend watching The Game Changers on Netflix and good to see you're proof going that route works and is benefitting you.

I’ve heard a lot of people that like to do CrossFit because it knocks out both strength conditioning and cardio.

I normally just run and stretch a lot at home.

Crossfit gets you in great shape but it also absolutely destroyed my back last year. I've lifted weights for a good 15+ years now and always focus on good form during crossfit as I know it's risky. All it takes is one little careless manuever to bust a couple discs. The competition aspect of crossfit got the best of me. That being said, now I use a crossfit app and do workouts on my own which has been going great!

What are the main muscles used in a golf swing? Which ones do you think a golfer at the gym should focus on to improve his game.

I am in no way certified to answer this so take this with a grain of salt. The swing is a full body move and I think the big muscles are the biggest contributors, but range-of-motion and flexibility play a equally important role. Deadlifts and yoga for the win!

Work outs. Not really. Play golf three to four days a week. Warm up before each match. With pulmonary and back issues just glad to be able to play golf at 73.

I recommend these pre-game warm ups in the link below to get your body ready to play. Stretching and warming up properly will beat any muscle building or strength gains from the gym.

    Lethbridge,

I had knee problems because the LB's got out of control. The Doc and the Physic suggested a weight loss program. this program allowed me to drop about 50 LBS. Still working on it want to drop another 25 or so. Three days a week exercise program with elastic bands rated between 85 - 105 lbs. Exercise concentrate on full body shoulders, chest, back, core and legs. The off three days are 30 minutes on the tread climber. Six days a week 30 minutes of Yoga Physic guy recommended as it helps balance and helps strengthen the overall body. Sunday a day of rest to allow the body to recuperate. It has helped the distance and provided a stamina boost for the round.
  20. TPI excercises and Yoga. Basically just to stay more flexible, more power=distance.

I do a 40 minute stretch routine first thing every morning. During the warm months I do each of the following twice a week: run, bike and walk/carry on the golf course. In the winter months I do the same, but, run, bike and walk inside. I swing a club every day along with limited putting and chipping. I have been retired, going on ten years, and I do everything I can to beat Father Time. Once you get into a routine it isn't as difficult as it sounds.

20min of yoga as much as I can, about 5 days a week. Lots of 30day programs on YouTube. It’s crazy how much stronger you feel even a week in.
