As you stated, both are usually in the bag. There has been a lot of previous posts on this subject and a few even got a bit heated. Nice that everyone has multiple options based on their own needs and preferences. Let's not get into the long debate of what is better. Let everyone use what works best for them.
  3. I used to use a golf buddy that told middle front back of green...but since got a range finder and has made me a smarter golfer for lay up shots and avoiding hazards.

I was a GPS guy for a long time. I played a course with a lot of blind shots. Now I play a more straightforward course and find a range finder better.

Actually.........Both! 99 & 44/100ths of the time a laser rangefinder. However, when on a strange/new course that I have not played I use a GPS phone app, to get the lay of the land and look for the landing area and any hazards or pitfalls that may not be visible from the tee. However once I'm in that fairway (or close to it), I'm on the rangefinder for distances to the pin, bunker etc.
  6. Rangefinder. I've tried both and that's my preference.

My GPS watch is always within 13 yards different from any range finder i have come across. Im not good enough to need a pin point yardage anyway. And i have only had 1 course that was not available on my gps and that was in the Dominican Republic in the my 8 yr golf career.

Its just less a of hassle to wear a watch and Garmins are very accurate. Its the one accessory i cannot play without.

    i meant 1 - 3 yards difference.
  9. My groups been comparing distances between GPS and Rangefinders all spring and seen 20yd swings between both with more accuracy from the range finder.

If you want to just know front, centers and backs the GPS is all you need.

I find the range finder to be more convenient.

rangefinder. Bushnell offers their app as well for free with the purchase of a rangefinder. I use this for times you don't have direct site to the target,
  11. I like having both, but I feel having the gps is more accurate because I don’t have a very steady hand to shoot distances

You need one made by Nikon. They use image stabilization to help those with less than rock steady hands!

After I got the rangefinder I sold the "voice caddie" to a friend. I will never go back.

Using both.. Find GPS helpful new course or when clubhouse doesn't have yardage book.. Rangefinder is a great backup, just find one that has great customer service!

I carry both. Use the laser for reachable pins. Use the GPS for center of greens when the pins are challenging or when the game is slightly off. I almost always look for center, front and back ranges regardless of whether I have ranged the pin though so if I were to choose just one it would be the GPS.

I like to use the range finder, though i have seen some very cool GPS devices out there. I just prefer to only carry 1 and i have a decent rangefinder so.. that works for me!

I am and always have been a user of a Bushnell rangefinders. Find them reliable in all conditions and have not had any issues with mine. Always carry an additional battery in the case! Most of the amateur tournaments we play in allow rangefinders (with slope off). Mine is a Tour Z6 Jolt with red optics and fits in the palm of my hand. Inside 125 yards it is accurate within 18 inches. I like the jolt feature because when your distance locks in the jolt lets you know. I have had it for a long time.

Never had a GPS device. Purchased a Range Finder and have used it for about 2-3 years now. It works for me.

Carry both but find the GPS easier just to quickly glance at. Don’t think I’m accurate enough to need to know the exact number!

I use a garmin watch that hooks up to an app on my phone it’s fantastic and I’ve never played a game without it, it also gives me hazards and layups.

However I do like the look of the rangefinders with the slope feature but there outside my budget
can you fix a rangefinder on hazards? Bunkers water etc? Or is it just the pins?
