  1. Hey just wondering does anyone everyone ever just game half their clubs? Makes you think about shots differently and I think enhances your ability to manipulate shots when there needed because your forced to do so with a half set.

It's a real eye opener when you face a certain yardage but don't have the right club (take some off or lean in on shorter club?) These are the things you will be asking yourself

I shot 88 today 47 front & 41 +18 back super slow play and i Hate slow play.

    In the bag:

    917 D2 10.5 913 3 wood 15 816 3H 19 718 AP1 5,7,9,PW SM7 60 D 12 (BEACHPARTY) Scotty Cameron Circa 62 No.3 (Murdered)

I actually did this for a round in May at a really premium golf course because it was hilly and we had to walk. I shot an 82 which is pretty good for me and thought I was sold. It was also very windy so club selection was interesting regardless.

Played a few more rounds with a 1/2 set and it was driving me crazy. The courses in San Diego can be very dry and target-y so missing yardages and not holding greens became too annoying to stomach.

Back to a full bag for me. I think 1/2 sets make more sense for links-style courses where you have more shot making options. Whatever floats your boat though. The light load was real nice.

I currently play 12 clubs and feel pretty comfortable managing the gaps. If playing in a scramble or something like that where carts are used, I might throw in the other two as specialty clubs. The only other times i might drop below 12 would be playing a Par 3 course like Bandon's Preserve or Pinehurst's Cradle.

I did it a few times in February/March of this year. Carried a 3W, 19* hybird, 5, 7, 9, GW, LW and putter - like you, I was a bit more focused and had to get creative with the clubs I had.
  5. Very cool way of thinking about creative shots. I’ve played with friends where if you win the hole you get to pull a club from their bag. Makes for a long day of putting with a hybrid and driving with a long iron, but fun nonetheless.

I haven't done it in a while and I used to more often and go out alone and play odds or even clubs from highest lofted down to driver. Sunday bags is perfect for the walk.

Once every couple years, we'll play a 3 club tournament. Our 9 hole course is only around 3100 yards so it's almost manageable. Some of the choices are interesting. Most guys will choose 3wood some kind of mid/short iron and a putter. I usually go 21 degree hybrid or 4iron (depending if the wind is up), 7 or 8 iron and putter.

On occasion I'll drop the putter and putt with a 54 SW. It's not as hard as it seems as long as you blade it and make contact somewhere near the center of the ball.

I have taken out a few clubs when walking in the spring but if I'm riding I'm packing my bag. Paid for 'em so might as well take 'em around with me!

No, but the way my game is coming back after this darn surgery, it might not be a bad idea. If I can find seven clubs that I can hit consistently and straight I would pretty happy. Maybe it is the heat index. Went to the driving range Monday and it was 108* at 10 am....... my mind has not been the same since...... that is just too hot to be out..... period..... thanks for the idea...... cz

My bag is a bit like a carousel. I'm always adjusting what I take depending on the course I'm playing and my bag will fluctuate between 9 and 14 clubs. It's a great way to make yourself get creative with different shots.

I only played a little golf growing up and through college. Started with my Dad's old hickory shafted set. Driver, 3 wood, niblick, mashie, etc.. The first "modern" set I played with was driver, 3 wood, 3,5,7,9 PW and a putter.

I didn't get a full set until the used Titleist clubs I bought after I was married.

Growing up in Scotland a half set was the natural progression in the 70s, basically because my parents could not afford a new full set.....I was overjoyed when Santa brought me a half set of Ben Sayers clubs.......when I started working it was a secondhand full set of a quality clubs then I purchased a new full set one club per week from my apprentice pay of £21 per week.....tell the young ones that today.......

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and started making mental notes on what clubs I use frequently at my home courses (my course has 36 holes). I’m considering pulling out the clubs I’m never comfortable hitting as a start just to remove the temptation to hit them at all.
  15. Great way to practice! I will do that on a couple local tracks if I am going to be walking nine cause I hate to carry my big cart bag!

I played nine clubs today, all Titleist: driver, fairway, 4, 6-pw irons, and putter. If I play 10 clubs I add a sw. I carry my clubs. I have to admit I do miss having all 14 club, but, for now it's nine or ten.

i tried it a couple times and realized real quick i just couldnt do it. Best i could do was leaving the 3 wood and 58* degree behind.

I had a friend of mine in Missouri That introduced me to playOmg rounds with just a PW and a putter from the forward tees. It definitely made you see shots differently and helped with positioning.

I coach HS men's golf so throughout the year I'll challenge my better players to skills matches.
We will play even # clubs, odd # clubs or irons only, it's beneficial because you just can't bomb and gouge. Even on our home course it makes you think .....madgolfer hitemstraight
