    Hey Team Titleist,

It's time for another quick poll and this one is inspired by the one and only Bob Vokey. We want to know how many wedges you have in your bag, so vote below to let us know and then add a comment to share some more details about your current wedge set up.

To get things started, here's what I'm gaming...

    New Titleist T100 PW

    Vokey Design SM9 50.12 F-Grind Raw Finish

    Vokey Design SM9 54.12 D-Grind Raw Finish

    Vokey Design SM9 58.04 T-Grind Raw Finish

I guess technically 4 (although I don’t know if I consider a 43-degree PW a wedge.) My AW (from another OEM) is 48 degrees and matches my irons. My actual wedges are:

    Vokey Design SM9 54.10S
    Vokey Design SM9 58.08M

The latter might be my favorite club in the bag.
  6. T350 Pw 43* VOKEY 48* TM Hi-Toe 52*. TM High-Toe 56*
  7. PW 47 (bent to 46) 620 MB set club — rotate between this and an SM9 46.10 F
    Gap 50.08 F
    Sand 54.10 S
    Lob 58.08 M

Sometimes, for certain courses that require more precision at the high end of the bag, I’ll use three wedges, and substitute a 52.08 F for the 50 and 54.

I love every one of these lofts. I have worked diligently to truly know what bounces and grinds are most effective for my game with each loft, and the gapping is perfect. They all have a place in my bag and I don’t hesitate to use any one of them. When I first starting playing golf, I had no idea how to fully utilize and appreciate what the wedges were and how to use them. I watched the tour pros mysteriously work magic with those clubs — but it all was beyond my grasp. I had been frustrated with my short game, and was fearful of any shots around the greens, but my dear friend gave me the Dave Pelz’s “Short Game Bible” book 20 years ago, which certainly helped, but still didn’t give me full confidence in what I was doing. I took a couple lessons with my club pros, which clarified some things. But it really was more about disciplined, committed and consistent practice and a couple of wedge fittings that helped me dial those shots in — not only for more reliable shots, but more confidence and much lower scoring.

I spend the majority of my practice time (70+%) with these clubs and my putter. I rarely take a full swing with any wedges, other than my pitching wedge, and I’ve spent the last couple years learning to master the less than full swing shots that are either the low check-check-stop shots, the low long rolling approaches, mid height (gentle check and short roll) and high lobs (check and stop).

There’s a great book out by Daniel Grieves, called “The Three Releases: The Short Game System” — which I highly recommend to anyone who fears their wedge games. I had a lot of techniques that I had learned over the 35 years I’ve been playing and learning about the short game. They worked well most of the time, but they were not always reliable under certain conditions (like under tourney pressure and soft, wet, into the grain shots). Even though I was pretty confident about my wedge shots around the greens, Grieves provided a very simplified approach that increased my success even more. He also updated my green side bunker shots, and now I have a greater repertoire than I ever had previously.
